Concentration Camp from WWII

We wanted to see Germany
So we rented a car and drove through the
Southern tip {Munich area}
Our main reason was to see the 2nd largest
Concentration camp from WWII
DACHAU
{click here for history}
{in German this means "Work Sets You Free"
it was the gate to enter into Dachau}

We toured the actual concentration camp.
The registration building was turned into a museum
It had actual history,
Facts and stories of real happenings,
Explanations of torcherings
And even a short film that was
Filmed while it was actually happening.
It was crazy to see the actual people that were there
How skinny they were
How torchered they were.

the only was to describe it here was:
gut-wrenching,
heart breaking
and
unbelievable
I couldn’t believe something like this actually happened
I cant comprehend being treated this way.
Or treating people the way the SS did the prisoners.

We toured the museum first and then
Walked through the actual grounds.
walked through the barracks
where they had role call every morning/night
the crematorium
the monuments
the burial grounds for ashes
the shooting ranges,
everything that was there originally.

It was such an emotional experience.
It was humbling and peaceful
We are so lucky to live like we do.
I hope nothing like this ever happens again.
No matter who you are.

Their schedule for the days were:
4:00 am – wake up
5:15 am – role call
{they would stand in role call for hours,
or even days on end}
Role call was used for 2 reasons:
1-To account for the missing/dead
2- punishment
From role call until noon- work
12:00-1:00 lunch
{which sometimes was skipped}
1:00-7:00 pm – work
7:00 pm – dinner
7:00-9:00 pm – supposed break
{they were required to clean, polish the dishes, make their beds, etc}
if there was one tiny mistake or even just ONE single
water spot on their eating bowl, they were punished
9:00 – lights out

The prisoners punishments would make you cringe.
They would lay you on this:
And then beat you with whips
They would make the prisoner count out loud the
Number of blows (2 guards) and if they counted wrong
The guards started over.
Or another punishment was that the SS guards would
Hang the prisoners with their hands behind their back
For hours.
The guards would swing them and hit them repeatedly.
And then laugh about it.
here is some captions/pictures explaining it:

You had a mark of your status
On your uniform
And some people would be punished just for their status
Not for any other reason
The homosexuals were treated the worse
Even worse than the low-class jews.

They would also send prisoners to be used as
Guinea pigs for medical experiments
They would use them for LEARNING surgery techniques
{they used the healthiest prisoners}
or freeze them to death to see which organs shut off first
they would inject people with diseases
they would gas them to test their brain.
And it was always just random prisoners.

Dachau was originally designed for 6,000 prisoners.
By the end in 1945,
There were 36,000 total.
6 times the amount of the total capacity.
And they were just crammed into barracks.
Diseases spread like wildfire.

Just according to statistics
{they gave a lower total due to giving up on tracking who died}
but the tracked number of deaths were
14,500.
That’s over half of the prisoners.
And that’s guessing low!
That’s only including the prisoners tracked at dachau
The murders {the SS guards would torcher the prisoners and
Claim they committed suicide}
This number didn’t include:
the death walks,
certain countries they didn’t care about,
the satellite concentration camps,
or the movements coming into or leaving dachau.

The gas chambers were built but not used
They didn’t need to kill the prisoners quickly with gas
They wanted to make them suffer
And treat them like slaves for work
Until they worked/ beat/starved the prisoners to death.

{below is the set up of the gas chambers}
{the #'s on the picture above are explained below}

I could tell you so many facts about the
horrendous acts that went on here.
I learned so much I didn’t know
{worse than I could ever imagine}
It breaks my heart.

For all of you who don’t think you have it good,
I hope this makes you feel SO blessed
There is always someone who has it worse than you.

 {this is ONE day's deaths}
 {very powerful statue of the "Death Marches"}
 {the nazi sign with sickly skinny jews}
 {how their bunks started}
 {bunks changed to fit more}
{how the bunks were near the end to fit as many as possible,
people would sleep on top of each other}
 {their showers}
 {toilets}
 {Role call area}
{actual picture}
 {where the barracks were- original foundation}
 {walkway from role call to barracks and crematorium}
 {actual picture}
 {monument built after the concentration camps were over}
{no escaping, there was a ditch, then barbwire over gravel,
then a barbwire fence, then a river}
Guards would take a prisoners hat, throw it in the ditch and
tell him to go get it, and shoot him
then claim that the prisoner committed suicide.
{way to the creamatorium}
 {where the dead bodies were stored before they were creamated}
 {the ovens, above you can see hooks where they would hang
some of the prisoners}
{pile of bodies}
 {statue - pile of bodies, so emotional}

{execution range with blood ditch}

{grave of thousands unknown}

  1. Anna I am so glad that you posted this. I am so fascinated and emotional about the whole holocaust situation. I am extremely jealous that you we able to be there, in the actual camp. I have watched endless documentaries about the horrible and tragic things that occurred, but never got to experience what you have. There is a memorial here in Boston and that is emotional enough.. I am sure it was a very draining day. Thanks again.. I would love to hear more or see more pictures:) Sorry for this long tangent post ;)
